Motorcycle loading ramps are an essential piece of equipment for loading and unloading motorcycles from pickup
trucks or even trailers. Without a ramp it’s next to impossible to load a bike even with a lot of help.
There are several types of ramps available. Each has some innovative features
which may help you to narrow down your choice. And depending on what type you choose, these loading ramps can do
double duty as ATV loading
ramps.
Most ramps are made of aluminum which is durable but lightweight. Although you can
buy ramps made from steel or iron they are much heavier and so are harder to handle.
Some ramps are non-folding. Although more space is required to store the ramp when
not in use, they are the easiest to set up. Just slide them into place against the tailgate. These are usually
shorter than folding ramps so may not be suitable for larger, heavier bikes because of the sharper angle from
ground to truck bed.
The better motorcycle loading ramps either fold or collapse into sections. Folding
ramps fold up into two or three sections while collapsing ramps can be broken down into several sections. This
makes for easy storage as well as quick set up.
Another reason for the popularity of these ramps is that the individual sections
can be stored inside your truck rather than in the truck bed, to deter theft.
In a collapsing ramp, the sections are usually held together by a reinforced
connecting rod for extra strength. With this type of motorcycle loading ramp, the platform will expand to a width
of several feet which gives you lots of room to walk or ride your bike up into the truck bed.
Another option is to use a combination ramp and bed extender. These are useful for
smaller pickup trucks where the bike is too long for the tailgate to be fastened after loading. For these, set up
time may be longer but they provide extra security than just trusting tie downs to hold the bike in
place.
Another great new innovation is the improvement in safety features on the latest
ramps. Newer ramps use safety straps to secure the ramp to your vehicle for added security when loading or
unloading your motorcycle. These safety straps do double duty. They are also used to keep the loading ramp itself
from moving around during transport.
Besides safety straps, many ramps have an attaching lip that has rubber pads to
help keep the ramp in place while loading or unloading a bike. This is great for the rider who is moving his
motorcycle on or off the truck unassisted.
With so many features and types of motorcycle loading ramps available you are
sure to find one that will work for you.
